Thinking about starting piano lessons? Here are the questions that I get asked most before a first lesson. If your question isn't answered here, just reach out and I'll get back to you directly.

Lessons run $40 for an hour or $20 for 30 minutes. For younger kids, or anyone who has trouble sitting still for a full hour, I usually suggest starting with the 30-minute lesson. Once you're a bit further along, I really do recommend moving up to the hour. It gives us enough time to actually work through technique and pieces without feeling rushed.

I teach out of First United Methodist Church of Taylorsville at 1400 Hwy 16 S in Taylorsville, NC.
My regular lesson times are Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. If neither of those works for you, just let me know and we'll figure out a day that works for both of us.

A keyboard with weighted, full-size keys works fine for beginners just starting out. As you progress past the basics, I'd recommend moving to a real piano to help build proper technique and feel.

Yes, I teach all my students to read music to some degree. Even if your goal is to play mostly by ear, reading and theory give you the tools to keep learning new pieces on your own long after lessons end.

Not necessarily. I'll encourage every student to try some level of classical music, since the technique, scales, and exercises that come with it train your hands and ear in ways that carry over into any style. Past that, I'm happy to cater what we work on to whatever you're actually trying to play.

I teach students of every age, from complete beginners to adults picking the piano back up after years away. What matters most to me is that you're coming in motivated and ready to put in the work. Beyond that, I'll meet you wherever you're starting from.
